A new gateway: Sunshine Coast Airport’s bold terminal transformation
The Sunshine Coast is taking a leap forward – and this time, it’s right under our wings. Plans for the Sunshine Coast Airport’s major terminal upgrade have been unveiled, revealing a project that will redefine travel, tourism, and connection for the region.
Unveiling the Vision
The airport’s domestic terminal is set for a $170 million redevelopment, with construction company McNab appointed as the builder.
The transformation will nearly double the terminal footprint from around 6,100 m² to 11,750 m² and expand from five to seven departure gates. The departure lounge will triple in size, offering more comfort, natural light, and space to unwind before boarding.
Travellers can also expect 18 self-service kiosks and 10 automatic bag drops, creating a more efficient check-in experience. The design reflects the Sunshine Coast’s relaxed coastal lifestyle, using natural materials and light-filled spaces to create a calm, welcoming environment.
Staged Progress
The project will unfold in stages to keep the airport operating smoothly. Stage One – a new outbound baggage facility – is already underway, with completion due in early 2026. The full redevelopment is expected to be finished in 2027.
To support construction, temporary changes to terminal access roads are in place, including reduced lanes and adjusted parking. These short-term disruptions will pave the way for long-term benefits to local travel and tourism.
Beyond the Terminal
The terminal transformation is part of a much bigger picture – the proposed Gateway Precinct Master Plan, which outlines 30 hectares of mixed-use development surrounding the airport.
Plans include:
- A 250-room hotel catering to travellers and conference guests
- New retail, dining, and lifestyle spaces showcasing local businesses
- A green spine linking the precinct with pedestrian and cycle paths
- A multi-level parking facility and upgraded road network to improve flow and access
All buildings within the precinct are limited to 10 storeys to maintain the Sunshine Coast’s sense of scale and identity.
What This Means for the Region
This project represents more than just an infrastructure upgrade – it’s a catalyst for growth across the Sunshine Coast.
- Tourism and connectivity: The expanded terminal will support more flights and larger aircraft, opening new routes for both domestic and future international travel.
- Local jobs: The construction phase alone is expected to create up to 2,000 jobs, with around 90 per cent sourced from local trades and suppliers.
- Business and property growth: Enhanced transport links and amenities will strengthen demand across nearby suburbs, driving local investment and opportunity.
- Sustainability leadership: Building on its existing 320-panel rooftop solar array, the airport aims to reduce energy use and carbon emissions even further through smart systems and sustainable design choices.
Building for the Future
As one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regions, the Sunshine Coast continues to attract new residents, businesses, and visitors each year.
The airport redevelopment is designed to meet that momentum – creating a gateway that not only supports growth but reflects the region’s character and lifestyle.
The project’s emphasis on design, sustainability, and community connection aligns with broader regional goals to balance expansion with liveability.
As the Sunshine Coast positions itself for the next decade of growth, this transformation marks an exciting milestone – one that reflects the region’s evolving story, from local travel hub to international gateway.
