Moving Soon? 7 Essential Tips for Tenants and Landlords for a Seamless Transition

Congratulations on your new home! Moving involves a lot, from packing and cleaning your old place to handling important tasks at your new house.

Whether you’re a buyer or a tenant, check out our top tips below, shared by a professional property manager, to help ensure a stress-free transition.

Removalists

Decide if you’ll handle the move yourself or enlist professional movers. If opting for professionals, start obtaining quotes and lock in a booking for your move date. Be sure to enquire about their moving process and if there are any additional fees for tricky access or flights of stairs.

Get Everything Connected

Ensure a smooth transition by connecting utilities promptly. Contact internet, energy, and gas providers, specifying your move-in date to avoid unnecessary charges.

Image Property has a free moving service that can organise multiple utilities and connections in one simple phone call, find out more here.

It’s also a good idea to know where your electrical box and water mains are for emergencies. This is really important to know in case of an emergency or when workers need to get to them while doing tasks on your property.

Sort Out the Admin

Ensure you keep documents of paperwork and receipts related to your move. Organise house and/or contents insurance if not done previously, taking the time to research and secure the best deal.

Update your address on important documents like your driver’s license, bank accounts, and subscriptions.

Check and Inspect

Once the keys are in your hand, take a stroll through your new home. Cross-reference photos from inspections with the current state to ensure everything aligns. Note down any repairs, ensuring they’re completed or documented.

Keep Kids and Pets Safe

When moving with little ones or pets, it’s essential to exercise extra caution to ensure their safety in the new environment.

Besides the typical safety measures like covering outlets and safeguarding against sharp corners, consider implementing additional precautions. These could include installing safety gates, surveying fences, and creating designated safe zones within the new space.

These measures help provide an added layer of protection, ensuring a secure and comfortable transition for your family members.

Wipe Over

Your property may have been vacant during tenancies. Start with a fresh canvas by giving your home a thorough wipe over of any dust and debris from high traffic areas.

Set Up Major Appliances

When you’re moving big appliances to your new home, it’s important to check if they made it through the move okay.

Prioritise setting up major appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and dryers to ensure they are in working condition.  Make sure to refer to the product manuals for instructions on how to safely set up these items. For example, with most refrigerators, it’s necessary to stabilise them in their new position for at least three hours before connecting and turning them on again.

Existing appliances in the home, such as the oven and stovetop, should be tested early on. This ensures they’re in good working condition for your tenancy.
