5 ways to make a rental property feel like home

All tenants want their rental properties to feel like their home and live there for as long as it suits their purposes and lifestyles.

Likewise, landlords want a tenant or tenants who treat the property like their home and who want to stay over the long-term, too.

A healthy and respectful relationship between a landlord and tenant, via professional property management, can help ensure that the needs of both parties are met.

As a tenant, there are many ways that you can make your rental property feel like a home without having to spend a tremendous amount of money, including the following five ideas.

Textiles

Tenants can easily change the look and feel of their rental property by using various textiles to personalise their homes.

If your property has floorboards, purchasing a few rugs that suit your personality is inexpensive.

If your property has wall coverings that aren’t your style, you can remove them (but make sure you store them safely for the end of the tenancy) and hang your own to reflect your tastes better. Likewise, with the generous or strategic use of cushions on your furniture.

House plants

While not everyone has a green thumb, having house plants on your property can make a big difference to its look and feel.

Some people like to have many house plants, while others are happy with a cactus.

Regardless of the type of botanicals you choose in the property, ensure a stand or saucer beneath each one to protect surfaces.

Wall hangings and art

Many rental properties already have hooks for wall hangings and art, so it is easy to reuse these to hang your own.

If the property is new or doesn’t have any hooks, you can use 3M stick hooks on walls that you can remove upon vacating without damage.

If you want to install stronger or more permanent hooks, don’t hesitate to contact your property manager to discuss them further.

Fragrance and light

As a property manager, there is nothing better than entering a rental property that smells beautiful – let alone if you are the lucky person who lives there.

There are a variety of diffusers on the market today that can produce an array of delicious fragrances in your home.

In a similar vein, there are a plethora of candles available that don’t even need to be lit for their perfume to permeate around your home.

Of course, with candles, always ensure they are away from window coverings and never leave them unattended.

Outdoor space

Most properties have outdoor space, whether a balcony, courtyard, or backyard.

You can easily create an outside area you love to spend time in, which can also significantly increase the usable space within a rental property.

Consider furnishings such as outside furniture, fairy lights, ornaments, and potted plants to make your outdoor space a fantastic place to spend time.
