The Brisbane suburb of Kangaroo Point is a bordered on three sides by the Brisbane River. One of the suburb’s two main attractions, the Story Bridge, links it to Brisbane’s Central Business District and the suburb of Fortitude Valley. Located to the south of Kangaroo Point is the suburb of Woolloongabba.
Kangaroo Point is serviced by the South East Busway transit line and buses along Main Street and Shafston Avenue. The Story Bridge and Captain Cook Bridge are used for access to the north, and the South East Freeway for access to the south. Cyclists, roller skaters and pedestrians also use the bicycle paths that run along the Brisbane River from South Bank to and over the Story Bridge. The M7 Clem Jones Tunnel, a toll tunnel with has a linked on Shafston Avenue, offers another transport route for residents of Kangaroo Point.
CityCat does not directly service the suburb. However, CityFerry runs daily from the Eagle Street Pier in the central business district and the Sydney Street Pier in New Farm to Holman Street close to the peak of the suburb, Thornton Street on the west side, or Dockside Pier on the east side.
Kangaroo Point offers plenty of recreational amenities, being near the city and the South Bank Parklands. The Kangaroo Point Cliffs, the other main attraction in the suburb, is popular for picnics, rock climbing and abseiling.
There are a number of parks within easy reach of Kangaroo Point. These parks include Raymond Park, Mowbray Park, Real Park, Heath Park and Wilson Park.
Movie goers can catch the latest local and Hollywood at Classic Cinema in East Brisbane, South Bank 5 Cinema Complex in South Brisbane and Balmoral Cinema in Bulimba.
Schools located in the suburb include St Joseph’s Primary School, Shafston University and the National Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts. The suburb is also close to St Laurence’s College, Anglican Church Grammar, All Hallow’s School, Somerville House, Brisbane State High School and Villanova College.
Pre-school children can enrol in child care centres such as the Oaklands Child Care and Kindergarten, East Brisbane Child Care and Early Learning Centre and Mowbray House Child Care Centre.
The hospitals in or near Kangaroo Point include Mount Olivet Hospital, St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Mater Private Hospital, Mater Private Clinic, Mater Medical Centre, Mater Adult Hospital and Mater Children’s Public and Private Hospital in South Brisbane.
Locals shop at the Stop’N’Shop on Main Street or they go to the Shopping Complex on Heidelberg St in East Brisbane and Gladstone Rd in Highgate Hill.
The riverside industrial site on the east portion of Kangaroo Point, overlooking Shafston Reach, is now an area of high-rise apartments. Castlebar Street is the address of the rich with a riverside enclave consisting of several residences with private jetties and starting prices of $1.69 million. As of 2011, 78.8% of the population were living in flats, units or apartments; and 16.6% lived in stand-alone houses. 59.9% are renting whilst 18.7% fully own their dwelling.
